A letter from our CEO
Dear Attendees,
We would like to extend our appreciation to everyone who attended and participated in the South County Economic Development Council’s Binational Forum last Friday, August 16th, at the National City South County Lighthouse of the San Diego Rescue Mission. Your presence and engagement were instrumental in making this event a resounding success.
Our region is uniquely positioned as a dynamic and interconnected community, sharing cultures, economies, and a collective vision for the future. Together, we are driving change and fostering growth for the millions who live, work, and dream in the Cali-Baja region.
A special thank you goes to our sponsors, Trucknet, LLC, the City and County of San Diego, Energy Communications, and our gracious host, the San Diego Rescue Mission, for their invaluable support in bringing this event to life.
The discussions throughout the day spurred insightful conversations on key areas of our binational economy, setting the stage for future collaboration and progress. We were honored to have SANDAG open the forum with a critical update on the Otay II Point of Entry. The presentation highlighted the significant financial impact our border has on our region and the substantial benefits that improved access will bring to all.
We would also like to express our deep appreciation to U.S. Deputy Consul General in Tijuana, William D. Swaney and CA State Senator Steve Padilla for leading a powerful discussion on the cooperative nature of our governments. Their insights on enhancing access, maximizing return on investment, and building a strong future for our Cali-Baja region were truly inspiring. The panel of local City Managers—Maria V. Kachadoorian, Tyler Foltz, and Ben Martinez—provided a comprehensive view of the importance of our coexisting regional economies. Their discussion underscored the interdependence that defines our region and emphasized the critical role of collaboration in our shared success.
The day concluded with an impactful panel featuring Juan Carlos Rodriguez Villava of Dalton Motors and Anthony Llompart of MediExcel. Their stories of why they chose to invest and build their businesses in South County and across our binational region reinforced the unique advantages we enjoy and the bright future we can continue to build together.
The forum reinforced the incredible potential of our region when we work together, and we are excited about the opportunities for further collaboration that lie ahead. Together, we can continue to create a one-of-a-kind lifestyle for all who call the Cali-Baja region home.
Thank you once again for your participation and commitment to our shared vision for a prosperous future.
Sincerely,
Jim O’ Callaghan
CEO / South County Economic Development Council (SCEDC)
