Chula Vista Mayor John McCann’s State of the City Address
On the evening of May 27, 2025, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann delivered his third State of the City address at the newly inaugurated Gaylord Pacific Resort. This event marked a significant moment as it was the first public gathering at the venue, symbolizing a new phase in the waterfront development of Chula Vista.
Economic Growth and Development
Mayor McCann highlighted the city’s ongoing economic growth, declaring, “This is Chula Vista’s decade!” He emphasized the Gaylord Resort as a pivotal element of the city’s future, predicting it will create thousands of jobs and contribute approximately $475 million annually to the local economy.
Financial Stability
The mayor praised Chula Vista’s balanced budget, contrasting it with the financial challenges faced by the City and County of San Diego.
Public Safety Initiatives
Public safety emerged as a key focus in McCann’s address. He detailed recent upgrades to the city’s oldest fire station and the expansion of the police force, stating, “These upgrades ensure our firefighters have the resources they need to continue to serve with dedication.” The police department has added 94 new positions, resulting in a 32% increase in authorized patrol staffing, funded through Measure A.
Addressing Homelessness
On the topic of homelessness, McCann announced a 7% decrease in the homeless population over the past year. He also mentioned the reopening of Harborside Park, which had been closed due to safety issues, asserting that restoring such spaces reflects the city’s commitment to community care and accountability.
Future Plans: Millenia Library
Looking ahead, the mayor unveiled plans for the new Millenia Library, set to open in summer 2026. This four-story facility will not only serve as a library but will also accommodate programs from San Diego State University’s School of Nursing and film production facilities. McCann remarked, “This library is our first step into the future for Chula Vista’s higher education and bringing Hollywood to the South Bay.”
