The South County Economic Development Council (SCEDC) is proud to announce the successful approval and funding of its California Employment Training Panel (ETP) grant. This important milestone will support incumbent automotive workers as the industry transitions toward a zero-emissions-focused future. With unanimous support from the panel and an eager ETP team, we look forward to this being the first step in attracting statewide investment in the amazing people of our communities.
Much like the reimagining of California’s State Capitol—where significant investment is being made to create a modern, forward-looking experience for all who work and visit (shoutout to our partner, Turner Construction)—SCEDC has embarked on its own reimagination of what is possible locally. Over the past several years, SCEDC has worked closely with the State of California to bring this vision to life, culminating in the first program of its kind for the South County region.
Through this ETP-funded initiative, SCEDC will partner with local stakeholders—ranging from Southwestern College to automotive dealerships across South County—to ensure existing automotive teams have access to the training and upskilling needed to thrive amid rapid technological change. As vehicles, systems, and service models evolve, so too must the skills of the workforce that supports them.
This funding—generated through a portion of the payroll tax paid by employers—is specifically designed to retain and retrain workers, strengthening both businesses and the broader regional economy. By investing in the people who keep South County moving, SCEDC is helping ensure local businesses remain competitive, innovative, and prepared for the future of transportation.
SCEDC looks forward to the meaningful outcomes this program will deliver: helping local businesses expand their offerings, equipping workers with new and in-demand skills, and enhancing the quality of life across the region through stronger services and economic opportunity. This upskilling effort positions South County businesses to stay ahead of the curve, attract new investment, and improve the lives of employees and the communities they serve.
