Major Leadership Transition at San Diego County Regional Airport Authority

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has officially announced a pivotal shift in its leadership. Lydia Ball has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Directors, taking the helm during a historic era of transformation for the region’s aviation infrastructure.

Appointed by City of San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Ms. Ball succeeds outgoing chair Guillermo “Gil” Cabrera, who steered the airport through pandemic recovery and the monumental initial phases of the new Terminal 1 project.

What This Means for San Diego’s Transit Future:

  • Terminal 1 Evolution: Ball will directly oversee the critical second phase of the Terminal 1 redevelopment, the largest capital improvement project in the airport’s history.
  • Deep Infrastructure Expertise: With over 20 years of experience as a public policy strategist, Ball brings a proven track record in clean energy, regional economic development, and cross-sector partnerships.
  • Proven Local Leadership: Her background includes serving as Chief of Staff to Council President Sean Elo-Rivera and directing vital environmental and community programs at The San Diego Foundation.

“She knows San Diego, she knows how to get complex things done, and she’s exactly who you want at the helm — whether that’s seeing Terminal 1 through to completion or ensuring the airport runs efficiently for generations to come.”

— Mayor Todd Gloria
