The Living Coast Discovery Center is unveiling its brand-new “Urban Oasis”. Tucked away inside the scenic San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, this nonprofit zoo and aquarium is shifting the spotlight to the wild creatures that live right in our backyards. Launching on Friday, June 5, the exhibit offers a fun, hands-on opportunity for families to connect with Southern California’s native urban wildlife. The exhibit invites visitors to look past the common misconception that wild city mammals are just neighborhood nuisances.

Guests can get up close with local species—including a popular, non-releasable raccoon named Ronnie—to learn how animals like opossums and raccoons act as nature’s crucial cleanup crew. By managing insect populations and clearing away decaying matter, these often-misunderstood critters play a critical role in stopping the spread of disease in shared environments.
